The Colorado Springs Flames
football team suffered its first and only loss of the 2008
season at the hands of the only other undefeated team of the
CFC. In what was the CFC's first championship that
hosted two undefeated conference teams, the 'powerful'
Colorado Grizzles beat the Flames 26 - 22 in a last minute
TD. The Flames held the lead in the game 22 - 19 at
the 2 minute warning. A faked spike of the ball and a
TD pass to "Big Play" Williams of the Grizzles sealed the
game for the 2008 champs. The Flames "all everything"
LB Donte' Stewart, along with REC Bobby Purify managed to
spark the Flames fans who were in attendance. Stewart
intercepted a pass and ran it in from 80 yards out while
Purify caught a TD pass for a 45 yard TD. QB James
Everett, who performed outstandingly throughout the season,
scored the teams first TD on a QB sneak. This
championship game was probably the best in CFC history as it
not only pitted two undefeated teams, but the fan attendance
was probably the largest in history. For example, the
Ellicott H. S. football team and fans had a fan bus attend
to support their coach, Donte' Stewart and the Flames team.
It was a marvelous contest for the players as well as its
fans. Although the Flames came up short of a win, the
fan support and team play illustrated the type of
organization that the Flames has grown to. "KEEP YOUR
HEADS IN THE AIR AND EYE ON THE PRIZE" you had a hell of a
season in growth and play. Thanks for the fun and
memories of the 2008 season.
